Barbara and David Grove

Barbara and I served near Lagos. She taught English at the Lagos Anglican Girls' Grammar School in Yaba. I was an Assistant Lecturer in the Law Faculty of the University of Lagos. The university was then located in a newly constructed secondary school in Surelere while its permanent site was under construction. At the time it had only three faculties -- commerce (begun by NYU under contract with USAID), law, and medicine, situated at the Lagos teaching hospital that was on an adjacent site. We lived in an embarrassingly comfortable flat at the university. (Top right in photos.) We completed our service in July 2004, at the end of our school years. Barbara was then five months pregnant with our first child, Jonathan Morgan, who was born in December 1964.

From 1967 to 1969 I served as an Attorney-Advisor in the Office of General Counsel of the Peace Corps in Washington, DC. During that time, among other responsibilities, I represented the Peace Corps and U.S. Government at international government-sponsored volunteer service meetings in Washington and Geneva, and participated in completion of service conferences on Majuro Atoll and Yap in Micronesia.--

Stan Burkey

Stan taught at Christ School, Ado-Ekiti. During his time there he organized the Ekiti Boy Scout troop. Stan had been actively involved in scouting as a boy and after his time in Nigeria he worked for a several years for the Boy Scouts of Norway. He and his wife, Kristin Eskeland, are pictured here with the Ekiti troop. The troop continued for twenty or more years after Stan left Nigeria.
